Turnberry touches Wood

Chris Wood battled the elements and the Ailsa course during another strong Open Championship performance and then declared Turnberry as the best he had ever played.
Wood, who finished a memorable fifth-place at Royal Birkdale a year ago to win The Silver Medal for being the top amateur, shot a third round 72 to follow two successive 70s, and give himself a fighting chance going into the final day.
“You’d never want to lose Turnberry,β said the 21-year-old. βIt’s a pleasure to play. It’s the best course I’ve ever played.
“This week has been fantastic. You couldn’t ask for better scenery, the course is in great condition and the way they’ve set up the rough really gives you something to think about on every hole.β
However, the Bristol golfer admitted the mental challenge of negotiating his way round the famed Ailsa course had left him with a headache.
“It was the worst I’ve felt and played on a course for ages. I’ve got a splitting headache and indigestion. And I think it’s down to the wind being so strong,β he said.
“It can dehydrate without you realising it. But I just need a good night’s sleep and hope to wake up feeling a bit better.
“And, if I can shoot level playing the way I have today, I don’t see any reason why I can’t be under par over the weekend.”
