Italian teenager Matteo Manassero emerged as a star for the future after shooting a one-under-par 69 in the final round of The Open Championship to complete an extraordinary week at Turnberry.
The 16-year-old secured the silver medal awarded to the leading amateur after finishing with a stunning two-over-par total of 282 for the Championship.
“The last few weeks I’ve been playing good so I’m very happy about this experience,” he said.
“Today was a good round and I got to win the silver medal. Special for me, it’s very good, a great achievement.”
Manassero, the youngest Open competitor in the modern era, secured his place in the third major of the year by becoming the youngest winner of the 124-year-old British amateur championship last month.
The youngster played the opening two rounds with golfing legend Tom Watson and revealed that the week had been an invaluable learning experience.
“Playing with Tom Watson I grew up a little bit because even if he doesn’t say something to you, even if he doesn’t give you advice, you grow up watching him. So it was great.”
